RareKids-CAN

Uniting Canada’s rare disease network.

RareKids-CAN is a diverse network of partners focused on accelerating clinical trials and access to innovative treatments for paediatric rare diseases across Canada. The initiative was launched with a $20 million investment from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

RareKids-CAN required a modern, mobile-friendly, bilingual website that connects researchers, families, patients, and partners involved in paediatric rare disease research throughout the country. The new website is designed to provide a platform to easily share insights, resources, and successes across the network.

Digital Strategy

The definitive source for rare disease support.

RareKids-CAN needed to vastly improve their digital presence to position their organization as a trusted authority for all childhood rare disease insights, research, and clinical trials in Canada. Their new website had to showcase a world-changing organization with the power to transform rare disease care and cures. It needed to deliver clear, easy-to-find information in an engaging way.

RareKids-CAN has three distinct audiences, and their new website needed to strategically balance the needs of all three. Their audiences include biotech and industry partners who want to learn more about the network, and academic research teams looking for support with their clinical trials. Families of youth living with a rare disease come to RareKids-CAN for current trials and engagement opportunities that could help their child.

When planning the digital strategy, we began by developing clear navigation that guides each user group on their path to understanding how RareKids-CAN can help them. Since the organization is still fairly new, we prioritized information to introduce who they are and who they serve. Through our UX design process, we built the framework for a visually driven structure that is engaging, accessible, and bilingual. We also introduced robust search and filtering capabilities, making it easier for users to quickly find relevant information.

UX/UI Design

Innovative and inclusive design.

RareKids-CAN strives for their brand to be innovative, bold, future-focused, professional, and transformative. We evolved their existing brand through an updated digital design system that includes cohesive UI styling and a component library. The elevated aesthetic combines scientific precision with a warm approachability.

As with all our projects, accessible design was a major priority. We ensured that the new site design followed best practices for accessibility compliance. We balanced this requirement with thoughtful movement and interactive elements, including hover effects and scrolling animations. Generous spacing, bold moments of colour, and considered visuals come together to create a design system that is equally clean and inviting.

Content Optimization

Creating the structure for compelling content.

RareKids-CAN’s previous website featured many pages with dense content and few visual breaks. Their value proposition for various audiences was buried and needed to be unearthed. Our team crafted content for key pages of the experience, setting the foundation and structure for the RareKids-CAN team to build upon. In addition to the homepage and about page, we created a “who we serve” page template for their three primary audiences featuring vital information about services, benefits, and relevant resources.

To ensure content on the RareKids-CAN site is engaging, accessible, and web-friendly, we helped transform lengthy copy into digestible content blocks. Powerful stats, impactful quotes, and succinct descriptions add visual variety and make content easier to absorb. This new content structure also makes it easier for RareKids-CAN to share compelling content with potential partners and encourage them to schedule a consultation.

Development

A central place for insights and impact.

Powered by WordPress and its built-in block editor, we developed a custom experience tailored to RareKids-CAN’s needs. Featuring repeatable patterns and pages, and complemented by Weglot for French translation, the new platform empowers their team to manage content in multiple languages with confidence.

The resource library provides a central area to grow their collection of tools, guidance documents, templates, and practical insights. With advanced search and filters for audience and resource types, the library helps the organization share knowledge and strengthen collaboration across their community.

Development for this project also involved integrating several external research databases and resource repositories. The new website seamlessly connects with databases for clinical trials, research papers, and more, bringing this information into a unified, user-friendly experience. Where APIs were available, we integrated them directly into the site, making complex resources easier to access and explore.

What’s Next

Built for future breakthroughs.

RareKids-CAN now has a platform with clear value for each of their key audiences. Just as important, their team now has greater visibility into how these audiences are engaging with the site. Using Google Site Kit, RareKids-CAN can access centralized data about how researchers, industry members, families, and other visitors are using the website. These insights will help inform future content and UX improvements, allowing the site to continue evolving with their organization.
