A smart platform to support physicians.

SWITCH BC
Enhancing workplace safety in BC care.
SWITCH BC is an innovative occupational health and safety organization. They influence and invest in programs aimed at improving the health, safety and well being of the 330,000+ people working in healthcare in BC.
The Community Physicians Health and Safety (CPHS) Program was developed in collaboration with SWITCH BC, Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health. This new program required a comprehensive web portal complete with resources, tools and templates to help community-based physicians across the province meet safety regulations.

Digital Strategy
The go-to source for community physicians.
When it comes to workplace health and safety, physicians used to have to search and sift through multiple sources to understand all the legislation and requirements they had to follow. There was no system-wide program to support them, and existing resources were difficult to navigate.
SWITCH BC sought to become the go-to resource that physicians think of first when planning a health and safety program. They wanted to be the single source of truth, providing vital safety resources in an easily digestible way to physicians and their support staff. Throughout the process, we regularly met with an oversight board comprised of partners, regulators, and physicians. This ensured we were strategically aligned on key milestones throughout the project.
Understanding the high demands community physicians face and the limited time they have available, we needed to ensure the platform was intuitive for users to navigate and easy for them to find the resources they’re looking for. We developed wireframes to create an e-learning-like experience that compartmentalizes each of the key safety topics into manageable modules. While all resources are open-source and readily accessible to all, we offered a straightforward account creation process that provides users with distinct functionality and exclusive access to urgent help.

All program topics are displayed with an at-a-glance view of their requirements.
UX/UI Design
Consistency across the board.
SWITCH BC’s brand personality is clean, modern, and hopeful. The colour palette balances moments of calm with a sense of urgency where required. For this health and safety platform, we created an experience that is consistent with the SWITCH BC brand and seamlessly integrates into their current web ecosystem. We leveraged SWITCH BC’s brand fonts, colours and illustrative elements throughout the new CPHS program platform to maintain this consistency.
The CPHS program portal reflects the innovative spirit of SWITCH BC. Intuitive organization of resources with digestible layouts and engaging interfaces put users in control as they make their way through content. The overall design is intentionally meant to emulate familiar e-learning platforms. Clear progress indicators provide functionality for returning users to track their progress, check off completed requirements, and pick up where they left off.

Content Optimization
Streamlining content with clarity.
As subject-matter experts, SWITCH BC’s content team provided draft copy for all health and safety program modules. However this content needed to be optimized and streamlined to ensure it was easily accessible and digestible. Our team stepped in to provide guidance, templates and copyediting support to SWITCH BC’s team to ensure the text-heavy content was user-friendly and web-ready.
Our shared goal with the content was to help simplify the process for community physicians to build a tailored health and safety program, essentially reducing their risk by ensuring they comply with mandatory regulations. This meant the approach had to ensure content struck the right balance in being easy-to-understand and helpful, while also making it clear that the regulations are non-negotiable and must be followed. To help make the information more engaging, we incorporated optional interactive quizzes throughout the topic content.
Development
Custom-built for BC clinics.
The development of the CPHS platform includes many custom features that extend beyond a typical WordPress website. As always, these features and functionality were planned out in detail during the early stages of the project with user needs in mind.
Core to the program is giving each practice a simple way to collaborate on and complete the requirements for their health and safety program. Knowing that requirements could take months to complete, we needed a way for physicians and their teams to be able to save their progress. Logging into their individual practice portal does just that. We included functionality to create team accounts which allow the practice admin to invite team members via email or a link so they can collaborate and share responsibilities on their program checklist. Creating an account also eases the administrative burden on physicians as their practice information is automatically pulled into various policy and procedure documents.
The resources themselves are a custom post type containing modules and sub modules with their own requirements. Each time a requirement is completed, it gets checked off in their master list. These shared interactive checklists include the ability to make requirements optional, recurring, or dependent on conditions such as clinic size. We included a “what’s new” custom post type to highlight recent updates to regulations which is prominently displayed when users log in. We also integrated Mailchimp for users to opt-in and receive email update notifications.

Conditional fields for clinics to determine first aid requirements based on their size.
What’s Next
Just what the doctors ordered.
Community physicians now have all the tools in one place to build their health and safety program (and reminders to keep them updated each year), providing peace of mind that they’re meeting provincial requirements. Ultimately this helps to make their practice safer for themselves, their staff, and their patients. For SWITCH BC, this platform provides their organization with a structure for future programs as they continue to support all those who provide care in BC’s health sector.
